The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline known throughout the world for its stunning natural beauty. Considered a World Heritage by UNESCO, the Amalfi Coast abounds with diversity; each of the countries of the Coast has its own unique character and traditions.
The Amalfi Coast is littered with ‘Spa hotels’ offering a range of treatments from simple ‘in-room’ massages to traditional Italian spa experiences to intriguing massages, full body scrubs and the usual day spa beauty treatments.
Grand Hotel Quisisana
Located in the heart of Capri, the Grand Hotel Quisisana is synonymous with island glitz, having attracted an exclusive crowd since opening in 1860. Quisisana literally means ‘here one heals’ and the spa features a Turkish bath, thalassotherapy, aromatherapy, facials, body treatments, massage, hot stone therapy as well as a variety of beauty treatments.
The spa consists of eight treatment rooms, in addition to a hammam area comprising a sauna, saltwater whirlpool, and swimming pool. Rated one of the top five spas in Europe, QuisiBeauty features La Prairie products in its beauty and spa treatments.
The Hotel Poseidon is situated in the centre of the delightful town of Positano, offering guests a charming view of the town’s alleys and cobblestone streets, often covered with brightly coloured pergolas.
The central location makes the Hotel Poseidon a perfect starting point for exploring the many towns of the Amalfi coast (Amalfi, Ravello, Praiano, Cetara and Conca de' Marini), as well as the Sorrento Peninsula and the islands of Capri and Ischia.
The hotel offers 48 rooms, outfitted with style and elegance, each equipped with a balcony or terrace where visitors can spend time admiring the sea views or looking out over the historic centre of the town.
One of the main features is the health and beauty centre where guests can choose from a wide selection of facials and body massages, visit the Shiatsu room or the Turkish bath set deep into the town’s bedrock.
The Hotel has been run by the Aonzo family for over 50 years and has a reputation that is well deserved.
Hotel Eden Roc
Another favourite in Positano is the four-star Eden Roc Hotel. The hotel manages a seamless blend of the intimacy of a family run hotel with the same standards, service and attention to detail of some of the larger luxury spa resorts. The Hotel’s Spa and Wellness Centre is divided into three sections; the massage centre, the gym and the steam baths.
Le Sirenuse is a wonderful place from which to enjoy the simple pleasures of Positano and the spectacular Amalfi Coast. The hotel is a converted 18th-century villa right in the centre of Positano. The beachfront property offers rooms and terraces 70 metres above sea level.
The Sirenuse Spa was designed by Gae Aulenti and offers a variety of massage treatments as well as face and body treatments using AVEDA's aromatic essential oils, natural products and techniques.
Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa
The Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa is one of the newest five-star luxury hotels on the Amalfi Coast. The hotel was born out of a restyling of a 17th-century monastery and sits high up on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea.
The Spa, designed according to the Italian Spa tradition, caters to guests from just 20 luxury rooms and was awarded the prestigious “Best Newcomer” award by Tatler magazine in 2012.
Relax in a Turkish bath, tepidarium, rocky sauna with crushed ice fountain, hydrotherapy pool, or take a swim in the magnificent infinity pool, magically suspended between sea and sky. The spa’s outdoor treatment garden looks out to the Gulf of Salerno, boasting a 180-degree panoramic view of Amalfi and Conca dei Marini.
Guests and non-residents alike can choose from 6 luxurious Spa Days ranging from 2 to 4 hours of treatments, including lunch, and full use of the spa’s thermal and hydro suite, outdoor infinity pool, and gardens.
The Hotel and Spa have been owned and managed by the Gamardella family for over 100 years. The hotel is a late 19th-century style villa and is the family’s interpretation of the Amalfi style.
There are only 22 luxury suites, so you’ll have plenty of privacy, and the rooms sit 35 metres above sea level offering stunning sea views. Elevators carved into the rocks transport visitors to a secluded beach with a private saltwater pool.
Rumour has it that guests have included, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, as well as Angelina and Brad. Santa Caterina’s spa includes a sauna, Turkish bath and massage service, plus a well-equipped fitness centre with amazing sea views.
The spa offers a range of face and body treatments, performed using essences of Mediterranean herbs and citrus fruits, all designed so as to re-establish a natural balance, and leave guests feeling relaxed, energized and rejuvenated.
If these fairy-tale setting sound too beautiful to be true, think again: the Amalfi Coast is one of the most scenic spots in the Mediterranean to enjoy your next Italian spa break.
